Groundwater quality can vary substantially within a single aquifer system. Casey J. R. Jones investigates the chemistry of the Coconino aquifer in northeastern Arizona, examining its potential as a water resource for the Hopi Tribe and Navajo Nation.
The report presents major-ion chemistry, dissolved solids, and selected trace metals, relating the measurements to geology and groundwater movement. It compares the observations with drinking-water standards and discusses the influence of a buried salt body on dissolved-solids concentrations. Maps and chemical analyses help distinguish the parts of the system and the conditions that would affect its development as a resource.
Published in 2025, the complete report includes the regional setting, methods, results, conclusions, and references. Original photographs and maps are retained, including Jon Mason’s USGS cover photograph of Chevelon Canyon and exposed Coconino sandstone.
