Juan Mendoza works above the ash pit in a railroad repair yard, operating a crane and its great clamshell bucket. Beneath him, black water receives the hot waste from locomotives, while the shops around the pit fill the air with machinery, smoke and noise.
His resentment of another worker gives a sudden accident a personal meaning. With no witness nearby and only moments to act, Juan must decide whether to leave an enemy to his fate or use his skill to bring him back from the depths.
This complete January 1928 story follows the crisis through Juan’s decision and its immediate aftermath. The original magazine illustration and production credits remain in the ebook.
