Robert Roreitner interprets Aristotle’s account of perception through the idea of a complete passive activity. He asks how perception can involve both receptivity and activity, and how its causal, qualitative and relational aspects fit together within Aristotle’s philosophy.
The study examines earlier accounts of perception, the role of the body and soul, discrimination, and the reception of forms without matter. Close readings of Aristotle and the ancient commentators develop an explanation of why describing perception as passive need not make the soul itself subject to the same changes as the perceptual organs.
The concluding discussion brings the argument together, followed by an appendix on five contested passages, references and two indexes. This is the complete 2025 monograph, preserving the original Greek citations and scholarly apparatus.
