J. P. Bryce brings the idea of evolution into a discussion of spiritual existence, science and religion. An Essay on Spiritual Evolution considers whether the development described in natural history can also help frame questions about the soul, individuality and continued existence.
The argument moves among accounts of matter and mind, the relation between physical and mental processes, and the claims made for spiritual phenomena. Bryce connects these questions to religious and philosophical traditions rather than treating them as isolated reports. This complete 1879 edition retains the original argument, notes and list of works consulted.
