The book chronicles the exploits of Harry Parkhurst, a midshipman aboard Her Majesty's gunboat, Serpent, as he navigates both the turbulent waters of Southeast Asia and the dangers posed by Malay pirates. As they idle on the gunboat, they witness a dramatic accident involving two canoes, leading them to leap into action to save a drowning child, the daughter of a Malay chief.
