Benjamin W. Porter examines the evidence for Moab as a place, a people, and a kingdom in the ancient southern Levant. Drawing on archaeological work in west-central Jordan and on the region’s written sources, he asks how securely its political, economic, and social history can be reconstructed. The book places familiar accounts alongside the uneven and sometimes incomplete evidence recovered from sites and landscapes.
Chapters move from the physical setting and second-millennium settlement to the inscriptions and ambitions associated with King Mesha, the location of the kingdom, religious practice, and relations with the Assyrian empire. The closing discussion considers the circumstances of Moab’s decline and the problems involved in identifying an ending. Maps, archaeological material, and detailed references support a study concerned with both what the evidence reveals and the questions it leaves open.
