Affective Bodily Awareness

by Frédérique de Vignemont

About this book

Frédérique de Vignemont examines bodily self-awareness through the significance that bodily states have for the person experiencing them. Her account brings feeling and motivation into discussions that often concentrate on sensory information or the capacity to act.

Four connected themes structure the argument. These concern awareness during instrumental and protective action, the motivating roles of pain and interoception, the sense of owning one’s body, and the body’s role in organizing awareness of the surrounding space. The discussion asks why bodily information sometimes remains peripheral and sometimes becomes urgently important.

By connecting these themes, the book considers how the body is experienced as valuable for survival and as the center from which the world is encountered. It offers a philosophical account of embodiment that relates the sense of self to the affective character of ordinary bodily life, rather than treating awareness as information alone.
