Advice in Conversation: Corpus Pragmatics Meets Mixed Methods

About this book

Nele Põldvere, Rachele De Felice and Carita Paradis examine how people give advice and how recipients respond to it in naturally occurring conversation. Their study treats advice as an exchange shaped by grammatical form, social relationships and the surrounding discussion.

Using the London–Lund Corpora of spoken British English, the authors compare conversational material from different periods and settings. The analysis combines close attention to individual exchanges with quantitative and statistical methods. It asks which constructions speakers use, how these choices vary, and which factors are most strongly associated with advice being accepted or resisted.

The findings connect changes in conversational practice over roughly half a century with the immediate circumstances of an interaction. The book provides a detailed example of mixed-method corpus pragmatics, showing how theoretical categories and observed speech can inform one another when studying an ordinary but socially delicate communicative act.
