Earthquake monitoring requires networks of instruments, reliable communications and systems that turn observations into useful information. This U.S. Geological Survey report reviews the Advanced National Seismic System and describes the opportunities and priorities identified for its development during 2017–2027.
The report connects monitoring capabilities with products used to describe earthquakes, shaking, possible losses and public experience. Maps, diagrams and sidebars illustrate network coverage, ground-motion measurements, geodetic observations, earthquake information and the uses of those data. The discussion also considers gaps in capability and the resources needed to strengthen the system. This is the complete original 2017 report in its July 2017 version 1.1, retaining the agency’s technical assessment, original figures, credits and supporting material.
