About this book

David Mason tells this supernatural business story through newspaper notices, office memoranda and a troubling old contract. Arthur Kelman, the new head of Barcroft Chemicals, begins his modernization campaign by questioning a monthly shipment for which the company appears to receive no payment.

The standing order predates the current employees and requires an unusual assortment of materials to be sent to a mysterious consignee named Sabazius. Kelman regards it as waste or dishonesty, while older staff remember instructions that the account must never be cancelled. His attempts to investigate the arrangement uncover obligations that ordinary bookkeeping does not explain.

The documentary form lets the reader assemble the danger from the same fragments that pass between the company’s departments. Each new piece of correspondence changes the meaning of the original debt. First published in Fear! in July 1960, this complete short story preserves its sequence of documents and the original Gutenberg edition’s credits and license.
